Hairy Eyebrow Galaxy (NGC 4526)

NGC 4526 Galaxy Astrophotography Martin Rusterholz

NGC 4526 is a mixed lenticular galaxy at a distance of about 40 million light-years in constellation Virgo. With a visible diameter of 7.5′, its true extension is about 68’000 light-years. The galaxy shines at mag 9.9 and when looking at the fine dustline around the inner part, the inclination of the disk can be determined to be 16° from edge-on. Because of the characteristic dustlane, O’Meara names the galaxy ‘Hairy Eyebrow Galaxy’ in his book ‘Hidden Treasures’.

The image is a classical LRGB with North at about 4 o’clock.

About Me

Hello, my name is Martin Rusterholz. I’m a Swiss amateur astrophotographer living near Zurich, the biggest town in Switzerland. My interest in astronomy started when I was 16. At that time, I built my first Newtonian telescope and mount. I studied physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) which was the only study including at least some aspects of astronomy and astrophysics. “Looking at the nights sky is an experience touching everybody deeply inside, something common to all human beings independent to the language spoken by the individuals”. Deep-sky astrophotography is my passion.
